Some say that specializing in one product is the path to success. Others argue that diversifying is a policy against economic recessions. Time has proved that neither strategy is wrong, and that each one has an expiration date. Here are two chemical companies that started with one product and have eventually diversified: DuPont (DD) and Air Products & Chemicals (APD). Let's take a look into their prospects for the years to come.
- [By Taylor Muckerman]
Along with Dow, DuPont (NYSE: DD ) and LyondellBasell (NYSE: LYB ) are two companies that have used this access to their advantage. All three will be reporting earnings this week. Motley Fool analyst Taylor Muckerman expects margins to remain relatively high, but the growth we have seen over the past few years might begin to slow. In addition, he touches on some of the future market dynamics that will likely roll out as the available infrastructure continues to increase. Details can be found in the video below.

DuPont (NYSE: DD ) is scheduled to release its quarterly earnings report tomorrow, and with its stock at its highest levels in more than a decade, investors are pleased with the company's success lately. But some recent concerns about DuPont's earnings make this quarterly report crucial for the company's future prospects, and a disappointment could set the stage for a reversal in the stock's strong performance.
- [By Dan Caplinger]
DuPont (NYSE: DD ) has dropped 1.8% as investors continue to punish the stock after yesterday's earnings warning. DuPont gets a substantial amount of business from its agricultural segment, and yesterday the company said that wet weather during the spring planting season would lead to lower-than-expected results for 2013. Despite continued calls for a record corn crop this year, estimates on yields have fallen as chilly and rainy conditions cause planting delays in several Midwestern states. Nevertheless, anything short of a repeat of last year's drought should lead to favorable prospects for DuPont.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Aaron Levitt]
Under the strain of the environmental liabilities, Kerr-McGee was forced to reorganize in 2001. As a result, it eventually spun off its chemicals business and a paint pigment plant into Tronox (TROX) in 2005. That spin-off took many of Kerr-McGee old environmental liabilities with it. Three months after it was complete, Anadarko offered to buy Kerr-McGee oil and gas assets. Tronox was later forced to file for bankruptcy under the weight of the fines and levies.
- [By Dan Caplinger]
Another source of potential problems is the titanium dioxide market. DuPont has made substantial investments in boosting TiO2 production based on the extremely high demand seen a couple of years ago, but buyers stockpiled substantial amounts of the chemical in order to avoid paying ever-higher prices. DuPont joined competitors Huntsman (NYSE: HUN ) and Tronox (NYSE: TROX ) in implementing TiO2 price increases, with DuPont's effective July 1, but the question remains whether the paint makers that need the chemical will keep buying or continue to seek cheaper substitutes.
- [By James O'Toole]
In 2005 and 2006, the company transferred its valuable oil and gas exploration assets to a new corporate entity that was later acquired by Anadarko. The environmental liabilities were left with the old company, which was renamed Tronox (TROX).
